  • short body are primitive. Some of the oldest Cambrian so called arthropods show no evidence of jointed appendages + Lewche regards the appendages they show as actually gills. One of the fossils shows a projection from the head that looks exactly like an annelid proboscis, in these early creatures also there is no head segmentation or appendages, it carries only the eyes. vide Leanchoilea. He feels that an early Cambrian coevolution - polyclad was the explosive ancestor of the annelids molluscs + arthropods. In evening saw Baerends film July 20 [date crossed out] of egg recognition in the herring gull. Expt. [experiment] consisted of altering eggs in size (x 1 1/2 + x 2); in proportion 1 1/2 larger x normal width + reverse; in shape, + in colour, plain, large + small spots of some #, large + small of some area; positive or neg [negative] spotting. All tests were prevented first against real eggs + then against each other by placing side by side on rim of vent with its own eggs removed. The position of the 2 exp [experimental] eggs was secured in a second trial to eliminate position preference. The left one was taken first when it was all even. The larger egg was taken preferentially, the rounder against the square cornered, the real against the artificially altered in colour, except that a pale egg larger in size with a large number of small dark spots was most attractive of all.
