Bats on river at dusk.
May 20 [1961]
Cloudy all day. Caught nil in all our 16
conibear traps (2 set off.). Rather dis
couraging, considering the number of beasts
that must be around. Camped on Mamin
River. Mike [Bigg] skinned hooter we got
in logged off area. Noted only 2 B.G. [Blue Grouse] here
hooting at noon; we got one. Blood
showed 1 filaria. Saw 1 R.T. [Red-tailed] hawk, 1 Goshawk
set 9 conibear along river.
May 22 [1961]
Again nothing in conibears, tho' [though] 2 set off if
that is any consolation.
Rain all day. Drove back thru [through] Juskatla
to pick up a few hundred pounds of baggage
On to Masset. Looked up Walter Feyer,
Jessie + Sam Simpson (with shell of his 45'
ketch well underway) + finally Pete [Peter] Henson,
Maggie [Henson] + the dogs.
In the rain Pete [Peter Henson] took us out to the meadows
Saw 12 cranes, hundred or so canadas [geese] and 40
White fronts. Pete [Peter Henson] put me + Mike [Bigg] in a pit
with two decoys nearby an [and] we had a beautiful
grass level view of the geese dropping their
landing gear as they dropped down in front
of us over the sites of Pete [Peter Henson]s 12 guage [gauge]. Pete,
the dog, was doing a good job scaring the
geese to us. Shot 1 Canada + 3 white
fronts in 7 shots. Just returned to the Land-
Rover to see the Mountie [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] wagon barreling down
the road towards us. A mountie [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] c [with] a red
moustache hop [word crossed out] jumped out with a "we got you
now" look in his eyes, followed closely by
a second. A cheery "hello" on our part
didn't seem to break the ice much, so
after a good deal of fumbling about in
my wallet I finally found the right
permit. Only then could we make light
