  • 185 Ashnola River. June 22-24 [1955] River Road closed by washout at Horseshoe; hiked in to Cabin on 22nd. On 23rd climbed to Starvation flats + then on over south slope Hot sunny day for central 6 hours cloudy + mild in early morning. Grass on ranges in excellent condition Gate open but no cattle on south slope, estimate 100 head on entire area. Saw 3 bulls at large. In my estimation grass on south slope has improved about 20% over the last 5 years + I can see no reason to suspect shortage of winter range as the factor limiting the increase of this herd of bighorn Census [underlined] 51 [female symbol] + yearlings, 31 lambs, 20 Rams as follows. [illegible numbers crossed out], 7 2 yrs [years], 3 3, 2 4, 1 5, 6 yrs [years] + 10 [words crossed out] 10 [crossed out] 7 6 yrs [years] + If we assume 14 yearlings then 37 ad [adult] [female symbol] had 31 lambs. However I do not believe there were more than 6 yearlings Something is killing a fairly large part of the young group before it is a year old. Predatory animals are still present. A coyote was seen to attack a lamb in this group on Flatiron some 2 weeks ago.
