  • 2 Coast Deer Study. Jordan River, V.I. [Vancouver Island], B.C. [British Columbia] Oct. [October] 9. 1938. Today hiked about 6 miles along the west coast trail. In this distance we encountered the tracks of 3 different deer. Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia] Oct [October] 11, 1938. Bruce Cash reports 40% damage to F. Reid's turnip crop at Pedder Bay. Strawberry + raspberry plant sweet pea + gladiolus flowers + leaves also eaten. Mangles [Mangels] heavily damaged. Three deer spike buck + young + old does in park enclosure. Offered these Garry Oak acorns + leaves, also leaves + fruit of snow berry. All these were eaten avidly with little preference evinced. They preferred the fruit of snowberry to the leaves of the same plant. The buck was definitely the dominant individual and by horning drove the others away from food he coveted. A sideways thrust in the ribs seemed to be his favourite tactic but occassionally [occasionally] he would but the does in the head
