  • found we were just too late - the way was blocked, + had to fight back against the wind to take the longer way home thus using more gas than we had counted on. We sputtered ignnominously to a stop just in site [sight] of Q.C.C. [Queen Charlotte City] + had to paddle the last 2 miles home, lit by a new moon. Didn't reach Charlotte until 11:30 pm. A long but profitable day. June 19 [1961] Spent day washing, sorting, etc [etcetera]. June 20 - Shipped to Alliford in Delbie Kendalls barge. Aliford [Alliford] deserted + boarded up except for a small crew, Sunny Tueman in charge. At Sandspit looked up Jack Fraser who continues to pot bears, + Doug McIntyre who has 3 Biologists from Nanaimo checking salmon streams. Awaited C.P.A. [Canadian Pacific Airline?] flight to hear whether there would be room on B.C.A. flight to Ventures in Tasu. No. Too many groceries Foiled again. So chartered a flight for tomorrow. Spent evening with Chuck Evans. Notes coon [raccoon] now common around Sandspit June 21 [1961] Collected plants + inverts [invertebrates] around Sandspit in a.m. [morning] Chuck Evans reported [male symbol] Pheasant on runway lately but I could find no sign. Saw a mockingbird or solitaire or shrike briefly. Finally left at noon by B.C.A. [British Columbia Airlines] drop- ping a load at Moresby camp. South past Louise then over Pacofi to Tasu. Mt. [Mount] De la Touch [Touche] snowy to the south, overlooking the excellent harbour. Landed by small float. Ken Poke, O.I.C. [Officer in Charge] came along + led us the 1/2 rough mile back to camp. Camp of 1/2 dozen large tents nestled in the trees on the last shore. Soon made friends with Henry the cook, + will likely stay on good terms with him if we keep our promise of not trapping his pet martens. After supper we set out in a [word crossed out] their fiberglass boat. Caught a few fish which we hung by 8 marten traps we set along the shore (out of the home range of Henry's we trust). Steep shoreline + high tide poor for spotting bear + deer but did manage to shoot a doe. Used guts by 2 marten traps + took along rest. Very few sea birds about: 1 P. [Pigeon] guillemot + 1/2 dozen M. [Marbled] murrelets.
