murmurs again. Buck smells
urine + gives grimace holding
it for 15 seconds, repeats for
10 seconds, feeds for 5 minutes.
Second doe appears but elicits
no attention + starts feeding
apart from the other two

In conversation with Sam
Smith, caretaker of the animals
Breeding In 1937-38 the old doe, which
is 9 years old, came in heat
about Dec. [December] 11, then every 25-27
days until mid March. In April
showed slight signs of heat.
During prooeestrus [proestrus] she would
run round + round the pen
until blown.
The 9 mos [months] old buck repeatedly
attempted to copulate with
her but was not tall enough
to reach her.
Weight. [Sam] Smith shot a buck at
Shawnigan that weighed 191 lbs [pounds]
dressed. Saw another that
scaled over 200. The 191 lb [pound]
animal was an old 2 pt. [point] + very
fat. It had two wounds
