Windy Cabin on Panther. July 4/43 [1943].
Saw 2 large bulls one 6 pt [point] 1 7 pt [point] near
cabin.
Kills:- 5 year old bull dead a year.
Abundance:- Elk tracks + winter droppings
all through the timber + high up
on the sidehills. Shed antlers seen
in 5 or 6 places up Snow Cr. [Creek] trail.
Sulphur Spring, Panther R. [River] July 5/43 [1943].
Elk sign everywhere, outnumbers sheep
sign 25 to 1. Must have seen 150 shed
antlers this afternoon.
Range showing initial signs of
overgrazing. The Quill grass (dom. [dominant] on
Bare Mt [Mountain]) has been so heavily used
that each clump is 4/5ths dead.
replacemen [word crossed out] the other species also show
very little carry over. Willows
are in some places eaten right
to the roots + all are 70% or more
browsed. Birch more lightly
used + in satisfactory condition
Apparently not as notable to elk.
Elk? have been browsing Cinquefoil
on the hillsides.
Kills:- 3 old but not senile males after
antlers shed
2 young sex ?
1 pieces of hide only found.
