- Ovis canadensis [underlined]
Jasper. Apr. [April] 17/43 [1943].
Census (cont [continued])
This totals 335 sheep today of which
only 2 were ad [adult] rams
37 ewes were with 18 lambs
the remained were not identified as
to age.
Predation [underlined] Frank Burstron - warden at Devona tells
of seeing an old ram lying on an open
hillside on the Miette range. Two coyotes
approached - the ram took no notice.
They came right up + sniffed at the
ram. One of them pawed at him +
the other nipped him. At this the
ram jumped to his feet fighting
mad + chased the coyotes all over
the hillside striking at them with
his fore feet.
Frank Wells tells of watching a
bunch of rams [word crossed out] sheep (above Buffalo
Prairie?) when a young one gave
a bleat + tore up the hill toward
the main bunch which had run
together. It leaped right over the
backs of the older rams [word crossed out] sheep +
it was seen to be pursued by
two coyotes who then gave up the
chase.
Diseases Examined 2 skulls of old rams -
apparently kills. Two teeth missing in each
