July 18. 1937. Worked until 10.15 a.m. skinning
birds collected yesterday, then drove up to mile
10 + hunted back to camp over side of mtn [mountain].
All this westerly side has been burnt over + is
now covered (sparsely) with evergreens from 3500
ft [feet] upwards, growth is heavier below that alt [altitude].
Along the water courses is a dense growth of Sitka
Alder, Poplar, some spruce, balsam + maple. This
last somewhat similar to vine maple - but leaves
narrower + more pointed. Very few birds in
evidence + only three red squirrels seen as well
as a number of ground squirrels. Noted
the following birds.
Willow Grouse 1/[female symbol] ad [adult] 2/juv. [juveniles] 3
Rufous Hummingbirds 3
Olive-backed Thrush 4
Red-eyed Vireo 3
Warbling Vireo 5
Pine siskin 12
Ruby Cr. [Crowned] Kinglets 2
Flycatcher - Wright? 1
Thunder storms + heavy rains in afternoon
Rain in evening. Set out a few mouse traps
This a.m. [morning] collected a [male symbol] Red Squirrel in a thick
clump of spruce + balsam. Two well made nests
on separate trees were in this clump, on 10 ft. [feet] + the
other about 18 ft [feet] above ground + composed of
cedar bark, rootlets, etc. [etcetera] - When collecting
at mile 30 Big Bend Highway found two squirrels
