- Sciurus carolinus
The Stanley Park introduction was
made in 1910 with two liberations
a few months apart. Material came
from the east.
1997:- Dec. [December] 14 There have been few squirrels
coming near our bird feeder since I removed
several (1 in October - 2 weeks ago one appeared
- a l. [large] [adult] male + then another, an apparent [female symbol]. Today
I watched the [female symbol] gyrating, summersaulting [somersaulting] + rolling
around branches - generally behaving as if demented
The attention of a young male was attracted
to her - a chase ensued in which whenever the
[male symbol] stopped the pursuit she came back. The
contacts became closer + ended in 20 +/- minutes
of "friendly" suffering with the male attempting
to mount. After about an hour they both
moved away. I don't think she was in estrus [oestrus]
but she appeared to be in a proestrus phase
attracting the yng [young] [male symbol] + attracted by it. The
large [male symbol] was present throughout + paid
no attention.
