Ranch. July 7/43 [1943]
Today climbed hill behind (N. [North] of)
ranch + examined the sheep
range. Worked all the slopes
for kills. In evening worked
the canyon on the Bighorn
similarly.
Range in excellent condition
no elk competition up on sheep
range. Good grass + excellent
broken rock retreats. Very
low mortality. All our searches
found traces of 3 kills of
this winter and 2 of previous
years (rams dead 5 or 6 years)
Found 1 deer kill + 1 dead coyote.
The Murphy's [Clifford and Nellie] found 2 sheep
18 deer + 5 or 6 elk kills this
winter. During the winter Clifford Murphy
saw 2 black + 2 gray wolves.
and at west Lakes 4 1/2 to 5
miles west of here 3 grays +
a black were seen. Mrs [Nellie] Murphy
saw a wolf here on July 3, 1943
In 1932 Wm [William] Nish heard
wolves at Scotch camp so wolves
have been in the district
for a long time - This bunch
here last winter was apparently
ranging out west where 3
were trapped.
