Mount Arrowsmith V.I. [Vancouver Island]
Sept. [September] 9-11 + 20-22. 1938. I McTC. [Ian McTaggart Cowan]
During the first trip up we
worked the entire east + north
facing slopes of the mountain
Blue grouse, golden crowned
+ savannah sparrows, pipits
+ hermit thrush were abundant.
Saw 2 Leucosticte + wounded
one without being able to recover
it. Red-b. [Red-breasted] nuthatch, kinglets, chickadees
+ winter wrens went as high
as the last tree clumps. One
Fox sparrow was seen but
not collected.
On the cliffs of the main
peak we located a covey of
six ad. [adult] [male symbol] white-tailed ptarmigans
+ collected 5 of them.
Later in the day we found
+ collected a [female symbol] + 5 young that
were feeding in the Abies
at the foot of the cliff.
Chief food at this time of
year seems to be Crow berries.
Band-tailed pigeons + Audubon
warblers seen in migration
also a sharp shinned hawk
+ one Turkey vulture.
Mice were extremely
scarce one Pery. [Peromyscus] being the
