Several elk seen were clean
moulted - all cows.
" June 5/ 46. [1946]
On an island in the river at mile
6 we disturbed a group of 78 cows, 2 yearlings
+ 1 calf elk. They entered the river
+ swam to the far side landing on
Eagles nest bluff. The calf made the
farther bank but was all in +
couldn't climb out. The old cow
came down the bank to him
several times + evinced great concern
but finally left him when we
approached.

Color even rusty brown with rump
area slightly paler, dark mid-dorsal
stripe + scattered light spots on the
