- Cervus canadensis
Food. Noted browsing on the wild
raspberry.
Healy Cr [Creek] June 18/43 [1943]
Food [underlined] Elk all through the aspen thickets on
Mt [Mount] Bourgeau. Found old bulls bedded up
at 7000' + higher + signs of them
feeding heavily on a finel divided leguminous
plant (spec. [specimen] saved). Winter food had consisted
of aspen, many young trees heavily browsed,
Douglas fir (light) birch, cornus + Acer.
Willows seriously barked - the large trees
up to 25'. Aspen barking very extensive.
Apparently quite a population wintered
there.
Census:- Saw 3 old bulls. All moulted
almost clean - a little old hair on neck.
Healy Cr. [Creek] June 19/43 [1943]
Kills. Found remains of a juv. [juvenile] elk. All
cleaned up but a few bone fragments
+ the [word crossed out] hair.
Winter:- Elk have been up Brewster Creek
since very early in the spring if
not all winter. Walter Childs in his
winter patrols saw no elk tracks
that he recalls. Similarly he doubts
if any elk wintered on Healy
Creek.
Census:- Saw 5 bulls 10 miles up
Brewster Creek. Elk sign outnumbers
moose 2 to 1.
Chawing aspens + willows.
