- Castor canadensis.
55 mi [miles] N.W. [northwest] Aklavik. June 25, 1947.
Henry Firth saw a beaver in the
river here today. We found last
years alder cutting in the lake to
the west of camp.
Junction of channel + Peel River. June 2/47 [1947].
In the exit channel from a tundra
lake today we saw fresh beaver
cuttings, as well as along the
channel where it was previously
seen. This cutting is primarily new, we
have seen none more than 2 years old, and
I am inclined to believe that the beaver have
but recently established themselves here.
Some of the McPherson Indians report
that beaver are over abundant in parts
of the Peel Preserve but this should be
checked on before accepted.
Aklavik. July 4, 1947.
Adolphus Norris says beaver occur on
his area but he had a bad time
protecting them. The natives shoot
them for food.
Reindeer Station July 9/47 [1947].
Beaver reported seen last week
on Schooner channel 9 miles above
Napoisk. Mrs [space left blank] reports
a colony close to the station.
