- Pine Grosbeak.
Monashee Pass B.C. [British Columbia] June 23rd 1937. alt. [altitude] 4000'
Five birds seen today. These taken by [Ian McTaggart] Cowan
in camp. 1/[female symbol] 2/[male symbol] + of these one is in adult red
plumage + the other altho [although] a breeding male still
held the female colour. In afternoon I shot a
breeding pair in trees behind old shack on hill east
of camp. Both birds were on the earth floor of shack,
+ flew out through hole in roof. All these birds were
evidently down to feed on ants about camp.
June 24/37 [1937] Several more visited camp
+ [Ian McTaggart] Cowan shot a juv [juvenile] plumaged breeding
male
Mt [Mount] Revelstoke B.C. [British Columbia] July 2/1937 A breeding
[male symbol] taken in spruce clump N.E [Northeast] slope, came
to one call.
July 3/37 [1937]. When out with [Ian McTaggart] Cowan this
afternoon took a breeding [male symbol] in timber on
nw [northwest] slope below rockslides. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan had
taken two during morning + so far all
taken are breeding males in immature or
female [?] plumage. One of the two taken
by [Ian McTaggart] Cowan is very much larger than the
other + lacks much of yellow feather markings
which is very pronounced in the smaller bird.
July 4/37 [1937] One seen on spruce top, it flew
down into a thick spruce nearby + I did not
see it fly out altho [although] I tried to whistle it into open
It may possibly be the birds' nesting site.
