- Ovis canadensis [underlined]
Aug [August] 2/43 [1943]
the darkest rams seen. The rest were
quite pale. The old rams were more
often dark than the young ones but
some of the old ones were pale.
Reproduction:- the absence of lambs is
astonishing. Predators, disease or
infertility might be responsible but
it seems more possible that these are
bands of dry ewes on the ram range
+ that the ewes with lambs are elsewhere.
Food:- Those watched seemed to be feeding
primarily on Arctic willow + the
slightly larger species of procumbent
willow.
Sexual activity:- observed in rams, one mounting
another.
Licks:- Found a bit of a dark earth
lick in a small watercourse running
down from the highest point on the
ridge preceding that of Southesk Cairn.
Cairn Cabin. Aug. [August] 4/43 [1943]
Today we went back up cabin creek +
worked the high ridges south. We saw 2
bands of sheep we had seen + counted the
day before + omitted these from our tally.
The area covered today amounted to only
about 10 square miles. In it we saw
96 rams, 23 ewes 10 lambs + 13 unsexed.
The rams were mostly 3 yrs [years] to 5 yrs [years], only 1
2 yr [years] old. The biggest bunch consisted of 82
rams 8 of them old adult animals.
