  • Cervus canadensis Waterton L. [Lakes] July 19/20. Left the car at the summit on the Chief Mt [Mountain] Road and hiked over the elk range to Sofa Mt [Mountain]. There is some browsing of willows, very slightly of aspen + little more on Acer glabra [underlined] Lots of grass carryover except on the lower parts on which the cattle have already made appreciable inroads Very little elk sign around the basin of Crooked Creek. Waterton L. [Lakes] July 22/45 [1945] Rode the Bradshaw ranch for some 5 hours. It is in a natural funnel constituted by the parkland portion of the Belly River Valley. Bradshaw first saw elk on his place in 1932. In 1936 they became a serious pest. Only last year did they begin bothering J.J. West whose ranch adjoins Bradshaws on the S [south] side of the Belly. Bradshaw saw 125 +/- staying all last summer in Crooked Creek basin. He has built 7 hay yards with 6 1/2 to 6 ft [foot] fences of 7 strands of barbed wire. They jump this to enter the yards + stampede out breaking poles + wire. Bradshaw argues that the Prov. Govt. [Provincial Government] proposals will not help because only
