- Ondatra.
Range:- One animal in #3 Lake
was followed for about 500 yds [yards]
before it entered a burrow.
Nests [underlined]:- In several places I have seen
shallow nests of sedge + dry grass
tucked into sheltered crevices in
tree stumps + willow or alder
clumps. These were apparently
used when the river was high.
9 mi [miles] N. [north] Aklavik [all underlined] June 16/47 [1947] [all underlined]
In #1 Lake, E. [east] arm. saw at least
13 different rats + tagged 6. 3 [male symbol] + 3 [female symbol].
Breeding:- Two of the females had small
amounts of clotted blood in the vaginal
orifice. None were nursing yet.
We watched 3 females [word crossed out] rats carrying nesting
material. They would select dry grass +
sedge + carry large mouthfuls of it
to the burrow. One animal when carrying
bedding entered the nest by an above
water entrance - the only time all
evening she was seen to use it.
Range of activity:- These rats had burrows
on steep banks of promontories + foraged
into the adjacent bays, travelling as
much as 500 yards to do this.
