- Journal.
Dr. [J.] Harvey suggests that a conserv. [conservation]
program that builds moral of the natives
might work. The James bay beaver
program was based on this plan.
With natives given beaver badges + set
to protecting beaver. Later each was
given a number + his number was
put on a certain number of beaver
lodges, from each of these he could
take a certain # of beaver.
Aug. [August] 2. Aklavik.
Rained hard all day clearing toward
evening. In later afternoon I set out
a line of mouse traps 18 in all
through second growth + spruce + along
the lakeshore.
In evening we patrolled 3 miles
up Jackfish Creek to the lake.
This is very shallow, large parts of
it not over 2 ft [feet] deep + most of
the shoreline 1 ft [foot] or less. Damming
would do no good as the shore is
too low. Potomageton pectinatus [underlined]
very abundant in the places with
1' +/- of water. In fruit + being
heavily utilized by widgeon.
No rat sign or rats seen in
entire trip except for a few tracks
on the creek bank
