- Ascaphus truei [underlined] [Tailed frog]
June 2/42 [1942] Drove to Woodlands, end of road
along west shore of north arm of
Burrard Inlet. From here we took
the trail over a ridge, about 1/2 mile
north to creek from which the
summer resort Sunshine gets its
water - Sunshine Creek, according
to geographical gazetteer.
The stream is small but permanent
+ not subject to much flooding. It
flows through a small ravine in
a S.E. [southeast] direction. Bed is rocky,
with boulders, stones + pebbles; many
pools + riffles. Much fallen logs,
underbrush, moss + lichen forming
excellent cover.
Tadpoles of Ascaphus [underlined] were first
observed about 200 yds [yards] up from mouth
(60? yds [yards] above water intake) at intervals
up the stream but most (4 or 5) were
seen and collected in a pool a short
distance up the north fork of the stream.
They were all in their first year,
about 25 to 30 mm [millimeters] in length and were
found in fairly swift water clinging
to stones.
