  • Rangifer montanus. Mt. [Mount] Revelstoke, B.C. [British Columbia] July 8, 1937. There is a band of caribou in this park. I have no idea of how many head, but should say 20-30. split up into at least two groups. I have found signs of their wintering on the slopes of Mt [Mount] Revelstoke down to 16 mile on the road but the main wintering ground is behind Mt [Mount] Revelstoke toward Eva Lake. Today I worked along the sub alpine country in the area mentioned + found fresh caribou tracks of 3 sizes, places where they had eaten saxifrage + browsed alpine willow. Dung examined seemed to be entirely Usnea In 6 places I found young balsams that had been stripped of branches + bark from 30 inches above ground, to a height of 5 to 5 1/2 ft [feet]. Some branches were on the ground, all the tips had been eaten.
