  • Odocoileus hemionus [underlined] Banff, Alta. [Alberta] June 7/43 [1943] Census [underlined]:- On way from Minnewanka Cabin to Bankhead saw 14 deer. Of these 1 was a [male symbol]; 7 [female symbol]'s ad. [adult]; 2 yearling [female symbol]s Banff, Alta. [Alberta] June 8/43. [1943] Saw mule deer as far up the Jasper Highway as Mosquito Creek + not again until 2 miles south of Saskatchewan. Census:- Saw 13 mule deer, of which 6 were on the Saskatchewan. 4 [female symbol]s + 2 [male symbol]'s in the lot, the rest not determined. None of the does had fawns with them. Apparently numbers of mule deer winter on the flats + benches along the Saskatchewan. 20 [+/-] spent last summer around the camp at Mosquito Cr. [creek] according to Warden E. [Ernest] Young. Speed:- A buck running his best alongside the car in rough going for 1/4 mile hit a top speed of 30 mph [miles per hour] + maintained about 28 mph [miles per hour]. At the end of the stretch he was tiring fast + was running or galloping instead of bounding. 15 Mile Cabin Spray, R. [river] June 11/43 [1943] A lone doe appeared on the bench east of river at 6:30 PM.
