Beautiful day with brilliant sun.
Temp. [temperature] fairly hot but dont know
what. humidity about 85%
Opening ceremony in
Santilham[?] hall was most
impressive. The hall was magnificent.
Lunch at the University was
a bit of a farce. Not enough
food to go round. Met Cas +
Bob [Siegel] also [V.R.] Ferris [illegible word] + Al Tesler [Tessler]
Bob Usinger, H.J. Coolidge; many
others.
Sat around for an hour or
so after lunch then went
down to the Trocadero where Cas +
Bob [Siegel] have their quarters.
Went shopping along New
Road a weird spot mostly
lined with shops selling
bronze, silver + other tourist
goods. Bought a few pieces
for ourselves. Dinner at
the Trocadero + then home
to bed.
Nov [November] 19 [1956] Bangkok
Temp. [temperature] 73.2 - 87.4 Bright sun.
humidity high. Up at 6 and
off to the meeting at 7:45.
Had a good session with a
particularly useful paper by a
Dr. Taylor on the general
subject of the interpretive
distribution + evolution of the
Scincidaes.
Lunch at the University then
went downtown with Helen
Kahn to do some necessary
shopping. We visited one of the
best known bazars [bazaars] a fabulous
place jampacked with humanity
selling almost anything you
can imagine. Wierd [weird] fruits I hadn't
even heard of before. Custard
apples, Pomelo, Tangerine, Passion
fruit, pineapple, lychi [lychee], Durian,
bananas, Mangatila[?], papaya.
Youngsters selling mothballs from
flat trap. Mostly the women,
are the aggressive sales people.
The men are more quiet +
in the background.
