- Castor canadensis. [underlined]
Reindeer Station July 10, 1947.
Examined a colony near here said
to contain 9 animals plus this
year's increase. There are three
small bank lodges. Or at least
3 places where some sticks and
mud have been placed on the bank.
Water depths at several points
in front of houses from 7 to 9 1/2
ft. [feet] Lake scarcely floods.
Food. Mainly willow - specimen taken -
but also eating alder with willow
still available.
Age:- This colony is 4 years old.
Reindeer Station July 16/47 [1947]
Mr P. Hogan states that he is told
that there are quite a few beaver
further down the river in Holmes
creek + that one was seen on the
northern tip of Richards Island
this spring.
Reindeer Station July 17, 1947.
A small colony on the lake
to the east of the river just
a mile or two above the
station food is largely willow.
Apparently the Eskimos have
the idea that we have counted
the beaver wherever we have
been + will be unlikely to
touch them for fear we will spot
the results.
