sheep up Bugaboo Cr [Creek], in the Selkirks.
will reebeck [?]. Elk + deer abundant,
moose increasing in the Selkirks
Banff, Alta. [Alberta] July 6/46 [1946].
En route dug out a coyote den
with 3 pups in it.
Saw 53 elk. 18 calves
3 [female symbol] whitetails
4 sheep.
Banff. July 7/46 [1946].
Bert [Pfeiffer] took the coyote pups back to
the den site. I spent the day writing
letters.
" July 8/46 [1946].
Went down Lake Minnewanka to examine
the area of rodent damage to the
pine forest. The pines are scattered
all over the lower slopes for a
distance of about a mile along the
lake + 200 yds [yards] wide. About 1/10th [one-tenth] of
the pines show some damage but
very few are seriously injured.
Damage consists of bark removal
at the bases of certain branches,
sometimes removal of bark from
the trunk + even total girdling.
All the evidence indicates squirrels
as the source of the damage.
