I asked him what would happen if
shooting were prohibited + he seemed
to be most concerned, said it would
be very hard for many Indians to
get enough rats by trapping
as many are not good enough
trappers. He looks upon the
gov't [government] letter as a blank check
+ feels that many Indians rather
than undertaking the hard
work of trapping would merely
apply for relief.
He states also that the idea of
looking into the future + saving
anything is foreign to native
outlook + almost none do so.
Consequently much educational
work should accompany the
efforts at conservation of fur.
He feels that the trapline
system has a good chance of
success but that most lines
are too small.
