- Porcupine (1) [circled]
Monashee Pass B.C. [British Columbia] June 24. 1937. alt. [altitude] 4000'
Two seen in evening in old shack on hill east of
camp + above road. One of these was rather
small + the other an adult was collected by
[Ian McTaggart] Cowan. Both these animals were much darker
in colour than the young animal [Ian McTaggart] Cowan
secured yesterday. Two miners working
up the Kettle River mentioned that two porcupine
are living about their camp.
June 26 1937 During afternoon went
up to shack on hill + photographed the
porcupine which is still living in the old
camp. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan + I tied a rope to its hind
foot + so secured it while being photographed.
It was very frightened + when let go
made a most amazing spectacle as it
hustled back to the shack.
Mt [Mount] Revelstoke Park. July 3. 1937. A large animal
seen down in valley east of camp. Was in open
meadow some distance from trees. Was
eating the leaves of young fireweed. It would
draw the plants towards itself with the claws of
left front paw + bite off the tender top leaves
This porcupine was quite unafraid + only
slightly elevated its quills when I walked
up to within six feet + whistled loudly.
July 9/37 [1937]. Came on a large porcupine in a
small meadow on north-westerly slope. It sat up
on its hind legs like a squirrel [word crossed out] marmot, after a few
minutes it scuttled off to a nearby clump of
balsam + climbed up out of reach. Over.
