his views on the deer situation.
During the last two winters he
reports heavy kill on the S [south]
side of the valley but pretty
fair survival on the S [south] facing
slopes where there was some
thawing during the winter. He says
also that there has been a
very heavy wintering kill of illegal
deer late in the season.
He + his family take from
8 to 11 cougars per year out of
the valley. Has recently taken two
in starving condition
Aug [August] 23/50 [1950] lake Cowichan
Heavy rain intermittently all day
Worked around camp this morning,
helped [James] Bendell get established. Located
the missing baggage in Nanaimo +
had it sent down.

Mr A.C. Howe + son drove me
up Robertson River as far as the
road now goes. We then worked
down into the creek bottom (A trib. [tributary]
of the San Juan) + up onto the
sidehill to the west. There was
an abundance of deer sign in
