  • Ballingall Island July 22/41 [1941] The island was again visited to take final movies of the cormorants and gulls. Young cormorants in all stages of growth were present in all nests but which still containted eggs. (Pelagic) In one nest of Pelagic, 2 young + one egg were present; in another 2 young, one freshly hatched (?) The latter were both found to be dead at the end of the afternoon possibly through sun stroke, though day was cloudy past two. Young of double crested cormorants in nest which contained eggs last trip (June 17/41 [1941]) were still quite small but very active. Young in nest which we noted last visit as just hatchling(?) were as large as parent bird but not yet feathered. No more than three young were noted in a nest. One yound was seen to leave nest, jumping into the next one, a foot or 18" [inches] away. Parent birds were very bold, coming to nest when we were within 12 feet of it. They did not feed readily, however, when we were close. Gulls [underlined] - Many young of several stages were running around and hiding on island and some were on the water One nest only was seen with 3 eggs present. Many young gulls were found dead, among nests + along shore. One was found dying in water's edge, from head wound, (from mature gull?)
