- Callospermophilus lateralis
Monashee Pass B.C. [British Columbia] June 24. 1937. During afternoon
visited rock slide on westerly side of pass. Just as
I fired at a pika I noticed a golden-mantled
Ground squirrel run up the rock slide. Shortly
afterwards Joyce [Cowan] called our attention to a chipmunk
which Ian [McTaggart Cowan] collected + which proved to be a
[male symbol] yearling. After considerable hunting +
watching again saw the ground squirrel at top
of slide behind old fallen tree, could just see
its head + as I began climbing towards it, it
ran across the rocks to a pile of old logs
where I secured it with a full charge of no [number] 10.
This animal proved to be an ad [adult] [female symbol].
June 25, 1937 Again visited rock
slide where I collected a sub-ad [subadult] [male symbol]
still in winter pelage.
June 27, 1937 an ad. [adult] [male symbol] taken on rocks
below road half mile south of slides. In winter
pelage except for trace of moulting in centre of back.
Mt. [Mount] Revelstoke B.C. [British Columbia] July 7, 1937. 6000'.
Found an adult [male symbol] "cally" [Callospermophilus] in a no [number] 1 trap
set under some balsam trees at south side
of rock slide on easterly slope. The trap
was baited with pack rat + was set for weasel.
This animal was about 80% moulted
from winter to summer pelage
July 16/37. Drove to summit + hiked into Eva
Lake. Hunted up to 7400 ft [feet] when [Ian McTaggart] Cowan took
three Callies [Callospermophilus] 2/[male symbol's 1/[female symbol].
