- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
food: Along the Marvel lake trail they had
been concentrating on the plant with
the cylindrical purple flower head +
the grass like plant with a bulb +
glaucous leaves. (Zygadenus) [added later]
Whiteman Cabin. June 15/43 [1943].
Sign indicates a few elk wintered
near upper Spray Lake but none
between Lower " " + here. The
paucity of tracks on the trail + absence
of droppings indicates that this is not
the route by which the elk reach
the upper Spray.
Healy Creek. June 17/43 [1943]
There is evidence of elk wintering
on the S [south] slope of Mt [Mount] Bourgeau
up at least 6 miles from Healy
Creek cabin. Aspens have been
chawed with a heavier activity
last winter than previously. This
may indicate a larger winter
population or a greater aspen
bark utilization under pressure
of heavy snow conditions.
Aspens are abundant + of
all ages from very young. There
is as yet no overcrowding of
this winter range but the 3 to
4 ft [feet] of snow that builds up may
render the going precarious.
Census:- Saw one large bull at 5 mile
