- Banff, Alta. [Alberta],
April 26/43.[1943]
Today drove 9 miles up the Spray + then
hiked the additional 6 miles up to 15 mile
cabin. Intermittent snow, clearing in
afternoon, light snow in open, up to
12 in. [inches] in the timber - good tracking.
Examined goat lick at 7 mile where goats
come down off Rundle + at 8 " "
" " " Sulphur. Only one animal
had been down to the latter + that about
From tracks estimate 4 coyotes in
6 miles (9 to 15 mile). Track of a grizzly
all the way. Had passed within 100 yds [yards]
of a dead elk without finding it.
The lower part of the valley up about
to mile 12 is narrow + steep with
spruce or spruce + pine to river level.
But the last 3 miles to the cabin are
along an open valley, an old burn.
The west side is growing up to spruce
rapidly + there are scattered spruce + pine
in the floor along with much willow
some dwarf birch + some potentilla.
The east side is fairly bare + grassy
to timber line with much deadfall.
This being the west slope had cleared off
sooner + harboured most of the game
seen. 80 elk + 6 sheep. Tracks of 1 grizzly
+ 4 coyotes + one either fox or fisher
