- Ascaphus [underlined] [tailed frog]
May 30/42 [1942]
Tadpoles of this species were observed
in "Ascaphus Creek" at Cultus Lake at
several points. Five were seen and
two were collected, the others eluding capture
+ escaping by hiding. All were seen
attached to stones in fairly strong
current of riffles; when disturbed they
released their hold, falling downstream a
short distance but usually swimming
against the current with ease. When
at rest fastened to a stone the long
tail waves freely in the current.
In a bottle they remained attached
to the glass side or bottom and demonstrated
feeding actions. Every so often the tadpoles
would shift forward by moving first the
lower sucker followed by the upper working
the jaws at the same time.
The specimens were kept overnight
in a hatchery basket in a trough of remaining
water. Basket was lined with muslin.
Tadpoles preferred to remain fastened to stones
placed in the basket. Before stones were
added, one larvae fastened itself to any
nail when the hand was placed in the water.
