- Marbled Murrelet.
Spider Island. July 4/39 [1939].
Shot a young bird, fully
fledged but still possessing the
egg tooth.
Kwakshua, Calvert Island, B.C. [British Columbia] July 14, 1939.
A pair of adults in breeding
plumage were seen several times
in front of the camp. A single
juvenile was taken a mile
up the inlet + another seen
at a different time.
July 15, 1939.
Watched a juvenile feeding on some
small fish. He would dive below
the fish + somehow had herded
together a dense ball of them
some 3 feet across. These made
the surface boil above them
but kept in a dense mass.
The murrelet fed only from
the bottom of the group +
when coming up to breathe
did so 7 or 8 ft [feet] away, remained
on the surface for only 10 seconds
or so + again went down.
Vancouver. Nov [November] 23/47 [1947]
1 Stomach contents:- 3 Fish resembling small herring
" 2 " " small quantity pinkish paste.
