- Red Tailed Hawk
9 mi [miles] N. [north] Aklavik June 14/47 [1947]
This evening a very dark buteo
with naked tarsi flew close by
It had the tail dark above + below
with transverse bars of black +
no trace of red. Could this have
been a Swainson[?]
Aklavik July 21/47 [1947].
Saw a young red tail of this
years brood about half way to
Boxer's.
36 mi [miles] S. [south] Aklavik. Aug. [August] 9. 1947.
At two points here, one at the junction
of the creek above here + the other 1/2 mile
down the river ad [adult] red-tails are
actively complaining whenever we
approach. One of these is a normally
colored bird, the other is dark but
both have the red tail.
