- Journal. Aug [August] 16/43 [1943]
of the year + shed antlers indicate at
least some wintering.
The ridge west between here + Blue
Creek is precipitous with steep shale
sidehills + grass slides. Rocks sedimentary
+ volcanic. First class goat range
[Frank] Borstrom [Burstrom] says that he used to
see sheep here, chiefly rams + in the
autumn.
Game Seen: At willow Cr. [Creek] 2 [female symbol] moose.
At this camp: 18 moose
47 goat
7 elk.
All but 2 when we were on foot.
Same local. Aug [August] 17/43 [1943]
Fine day after a night marred by
a heavy shower at 4 AM. that drove us
indoors. Climbed s. [south] tip of ridge East of
cabin + worked north along the ridge
to Sirius Peak, alt [altitude] 8233'. The S.W. [Southwest]
end of the ridge is typical winter
range. I suspect that it could winter
sheep but at [word crossed out] there were sign only
of goat caribou + moose. At timberline
the dominant grass is downy rye with
wild oat abundant. Above this the
rye thins out, oat becomes more
abundant, a tall tussock grass
appears. This phase gives way to a
an association dominated by a sedge
which in turn is replaced by a dwarf
