Oct. [October] 13, 1938. Victoria B.C. [British Columbia]
Fed the 3 deer in the park. Acorns, Garry Oak leaves, Alnus [underlined]
rubra [underlined] leaves, Philadelphus lewisii [underlined]
leaves, Spirea discolor [underlined] leaves,
Arbutus menziesii [underlined] leaves and
a branch of Abies grandis. [underlined]
Except for the last they
ate all these with equal
relish. The Abies [underlined] they neglected.
Bracken tips + Ribes [Rubus] leucodermis [underlined]
were submitted together. They
ate both but preferred the latter.
Oak leaves were rejected
after they started to turn
yellow.
The buck smelled the fresh
urine of one of the does + then
showed his teeth after the
manner of goats + other
domestic animals.
