gophers were doing a great deal of
damage in Bostock's alfalfa
fields, spoiling irrigation, causing
undermining + washouts, + throwing
up mounds all over the fields.
The stomachs of 8 examined
contained roots + green alfalfa.
It seemed as if each set
of workings was used by
only 1 gopher. More were
taken during the day than
at night.
July 7. [1929] Monte Cr. [Creek] Hot + dry
3 white footed mice in river
bottom.
A long-tailed weasel wandered
into camp while I was eating
my supper. It ran around
+ made a thumping noise
with its feet, much like a rabbit
+ finally took one of my
squirrels + started across
the river on a log. Half way
