  • May 25. Journal. Deer counted = 58 + using this to horses seen gives a figure of 97 deer or about 5 per square mile. Saw about 5 pair of solitary sandpipers a pair on each pond, 3 pairs of yellowlegs. Picked up a dead hermit thrush. Caught a toad + 3 wood frogs Blue Creek. May 26, 1944 Fine day, left willow creek at 10, arrived here at 3:30 - distance about 16 miles. In late afternoon + evening we followed the banks of the Snake Indian up to the west end of the first lake. Here + on the North facing slope of the mountain we saw several moose. On the lake itself we saw a family of geese 2 ad [adult] + 6 newly hatched young, mallard, green w. [winged] teal + 13 scaup, a group of rusty blackbirds were active at the west end. Game seen. Moose 12 Caribou 2 Deer 6 Goat 11
