- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
Carrot Creek. June 4+5
Census [underlined]:- Saw 8 elk near the mouth of the creek.
Several tracks along the creek - all heading
up.
Near our camp there were about
4 or 5 large bulls. We saw 3 of
them. All almost completely moulted
+ with antlers throwing the 4th prong.
10 or 12 elk have wintered in
here this last wintered. Chawing
on the aspens was heavy last winter
light the year before + I have seen
almost none older than that. Apparently
the elk are just working in here.
Banff. Alta. [Alberta] June 7/43 [1943].
A few elk wintered along the N. [North] side
of Minnewanka. All Stenton has ever
seen have been bulls. Saw 6 shed
antlers of large bulls.
Kills:- Found remains of a large old
bull that died after shedding. Front
teeth are worn to the gums but
molars though worn appear still
serviceable. Nothing to indicate that
it was a predator kill.
Pregnancy ratio - figures from E. [Ernest] Stenton.
Jan. [January] 1942. 52 cows - 36 calves.
