- Devona Range April 19/43. [1943]
Eleagnus [underlined] utilized to same extent as willow.
On the flats here in places the mats of
relatively unpalatable hair grass protect the
range from physical damage by trampling.
Rose browsing:- Twig length (new shoots)
After browsing:- 70, 50, 90, 140, 100, 120, 80,
130, 90, 100, 60, 100, 40, 110, 140.
Hillside Flat:-
About 50% groundsurface bare. 90% of
ground cover is grass of two species, 10% sage
etc [etcetera].
The extra shade provided by the stockade
+ vegatative cover has a marked effect
in retention of soil moisture. The soil
inside the stockade is moist - outside dry.
Composition of the range outside will
have to be made later but it is
now noted that a medium length
grass with strong midleaf groove is
not eaten at all - check this for
species.
Higher on the ridge there are some
Aspens, all bear "chaw marks" + there
are no seedlings anywhere. Aspen seedings
+ sprouts 100% browsed. -Ditto for willows.
Considerable wind erosion on top of
ridge
