- 9. AM. First bulldog flies buzzed over
my head. at same time large
fork buck comes down hill
opposite at a trot, enters clumb [clump]
of fir + alder on edge of swamp for 15 minutes + beds
in alder fringe. I approached
this buck purposely giving him
my wind + making no effort
to be quiet. he broke when
I was within 10 yards + went
up hill without stopping.
9:45. Jumped two fork bucks
out of willow grove in middle
of swamp. I don't think they scented
me but probably heard my
approach as I was only 15 yards
away. One broke w. [west] onto open hill + one s [south]
along swamp for 30 yards then
both stopped + looked in all directions
without snorting or obviously
testing the air. Buck in swamp
climbed hill + joined first buck
+ they made off walking rapidly
+ stopping for frequent looks
After going 2 or 3 hundred yards
they began to go slowly + snatch
mouthfuls of food en route.
