  • The small birds are on the move now. Saw 2 companies of Hudsonian chickadees today, with groups of warblers etc [etcetera] that included myrtles, blackpolls, Wilsons + yellow w. [warblers] Ruby crowned kinglet + water thrush. Lang's Post. Aug. [August] 10/47 [1947] Weather overcast but still + no rain in morning but heavy rain in evening until 11 PM then clearing. Mosquitos very bad + with them + the rain we had one of the most miserable evenings of the summer. In the morning we returned to the grassy lake we found on our first day here, took in the canoe + found the lake to be the best one we have yet seen. There are at least 7 active burrows around it + I think we can get traps into all of them In the evening we set out our traps + got thoroughly soaked, got home at just after 11 PM. Found the Arctic loon chick, seen by us 5 days ago, dead on the edge of its nest. Cause of death unknown. Waterfowl Widgeon [Wigeon] 5, G.w. [Green-wing] teal 2.
