  • Journal 2 to 1. The RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] corporal spoke of a native managed cooperative of 20 +/- families at Christian Village, Alaska - just below Fort Yukon. Had a 3 hour session with Archdeacon [D.B.] Marsh. He feels very emphatically that the registered trap line system will not work out for the Eskimos. Says that they themselves at an all Eskimo meeting asked for an Eskimo area N [North] of Aklavik channel, within which the incumbent whites would retain their rights but could transfer only to natives. His reason for feeling that the system will not work is that the Eskimo must stay where he can get food. Just now rats have represented food, as cash but if rats cease to occupy this position, they will move to the coast to places where food can be obtained. He states that the the Alaskan Eskimos came in here after the gov't [government] took over trading posts + closed up a lot of them. The Alaskans came to Aklavik to trade + stayed to trap + shoot If they leave for food how long will their lines be held for them.
