- Pacific Loon.
Aklavik July 21/47 [1947]
So far we have seen no
young loons or indications of
breeding. The round lake at
Boxers, of steady height + subject
to little flooding has always had
loons on it, 6 today, no doubt
in response to its very abundant
insect fauna.
Lang's, 36 mi [miles] S [south] Aklavik. Aug [August] 5/47 [1947].
Today we surprised a loon as it was
attacking a 3/4 grown Holboell grebe. The
grebe was disabled, had a wound at
the base of the beak on the left side
+ on the right side a bad wound
in front of the eye + a cut in the
cuticle of the beak.
On another lake I saw a pair
of loons with a newly hatched
young one. The nest was on a
bare tussock projecting in front
of a low point. On Aug [August] 10 found this chick
dead on the edge of the nest.
Langs Post. Aug. [August] 9/1947.
Yesterday evening found a pair of
loons with a half grown chick which
I collected. Stomach contents about
2 teaspoons full of green vegetation
apparently Myriophyllum [underlined]. but
possibly Chara [underlined].
