I had a very pleasant evening
+ excellent meal with the Degerbol family
at their house in Lyngby. They have
a summer house at the beach also
but do not own a car. Few people
do + bicycling is the rule. Some of the
bicycles are most ingenious - especially
those used by delivery boys. with a small
front wheel set in front of the load.
Copenhagen. Sept [September] 19, 1952
This morning after breakfast I made a
round of the botanical garden. It is not a
large one but very well kept + with
a large greenhouse, palm house +
shade + glass buildings. It is part of the
university + has obviously been laid
out to provide illustrations of ecological
groups. There is a lake of 3 acres or so
bordered with suitable plants + trees +
another pond is used, all around the
edge, for the bog plants in separate
"cells". All are covered with wire
screening to protect them from burn
