FISHER - Harold Dean.
passed away peacefully at
the Royal Jubilee Hospital in
Victoria. Born in April 8,
1922 in Kamloops, B.C. [British Columbia]
Dean developed a love of
flora and fauna during his
childhood years accompa-
nied by his equine compan-
ion "Spanker". He graduated
in Zoology with honours from
UBC [University of British Columbia] in 1944 and completed
his Masters in 1947. After a
brief stint with the Canadian
Wildlife Service in Ottawa, he
served as a marine mammal
biologist for the federal gov-
ernment of the Atlantic Coast
headquartered at St. [Saint]
Andrews conducting six-
seven months of field work in
the Maritimes. He received
his PhD on harp seal repro-
duction from McGill Univer-
sity in 1952, and continued
his work on seal reproduc-
tion as senior scientist for the
federal government. From
1955-63 he served as the Di-
rector of the Arctic Biological
Station for Fisheries Canada
headquartered in Montreal,
overseeing Arctic studies in
oceanography, fisheries and
marine mammals. From
1963-1984, Dean taught as a
Professor of Zoology at the
University of British Colum-
bia, retiring in 1986. He
served a two year position as
the Director of Research on
the Royal Commission on
Sealing from 1984-86 in
Montreal. Upon his retire-
ment in 1986, Dean and Mar-
garet enjoyed many happy
times birding and canoeing
in Osoyoos Lake. He is sur-
vived by his beloved wife,
Margaret of 48 years. Loving
and caring father of son,
John and his wife, Colleen of
North Vancouver; daughter,
Kim of Galiano Island and
daughter, Lindsay of Victoria.
Wonderful and caring grand-
father to grandchildren, Jen-
nifer, Sarah, Christopher,
Megan, Joshua and Trevor.
At his request, no funeral.
Cremation has been arranged
through First Memorial Funeral
Services. The family acknowl-
edges the kind and compas-
sionate care he received from
Dr. Hosgood, nursing staff at
the Royal Jubilee in Victoria
and to Dr. Buskard and his
team at the Vancouver Hospi-
tal. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Greater
Victoria Hospital Society, in
memory of Harold Dean
Fisher.
