Aklavik. June 20/47 [1947]
Attended session on trap lines
of Eskimos this afternoon + a
meeting of the trappers assoc [association] this
evening. The difficulties of
working in 3 languages becomes
very apparent.
The eskimos were handled
by Owen Allen who strikes me
as capable but big physically
+ a big inclined to buldoze [bulldoze]
certain of his compatriots. Some
of the natives did not seem very
happy about the decisions reached.
Size of present family seemed
to be taken into a lot of consideration
And a young man, not married
given a small line + young
man with one or two children
also a small line - actually
these men have just as much
need of a big line now as the
older men with large families.
There is no provision made
for expansion.
Employment here is trapping,
fishing, firewood, some labouring
with the first by far the largest
source of income.
