- Journal. Jasper. May 1./45 [1945] Arrived in Jasper + spent afternoon in office making arrangements. " Good weather May 2/45 [1945]. Car supplied me wouldn't run but managed to get onto the lodge grounds + examine a deer there " Good weather May 3/45 [1945]. Started out for East gate but car broke down at mile 22 + I spent the rest of the day getting home. " Clear + bright May 4/45 [1945] With Frank Wells ran up to mile 29 + then back to mile 12, crossed Athabasca on a boat + spent the day on Buffalo Prairie Overgrazing there + elsewhere in the valley is bad. Grass carryover except in sloughs is 0 to 10%. Examined 16 beaver ponds of which 4 small ones are still active on one beaver are down to spruce, on another jack pine is now only tree being eaten. Other two still have poplar available Some of the abandoned ponds have been of large size + according to F. [Frank] Wells, furnished excellent fishing until about 10 years ago.
